Recently, I was informed that many of the poor and homeless who have died in Lawrence in the last 36 years are buried in a place in Bellevue Cemetery without any type of marker or name. It was very sad to hear this. However, thanks to the efforts of Bridget Shaheen of Lazarus House and the generosity of many people, a commemorative plaque with their names will be erected in St. Mary’s Cemetery, in the near future, to commemorate these brothers and sisters in the faith.

Accompanying this noble initiative I want to propose to pray for these deceased, our brothers and sisters, especially in this month of November. Perhaps they died alone, without family, and no one remembers praying for them or offering a Mass for them.

In the parish office, we have a list of more than 250 names of deceased homeless persons. If any of you, in charity, wish to do an act of mercy and offer a Mass for them, please contact the parish office at (978) 685-1111. It is my intention that we can offer a Mass for each of the homeless people who have died in the last 36 years.

Fr. Israel

P. Israel

cisne 2019

We congratulate the Ecuadorian community and all who joined them in celebration of the Feast of the Virgin of Cisne, patron saint of Ecuadorians.

We thank Cardinal Seán Patrick for his presence at the Mass and our prayer is that the Lord continue to bless his ministry as pastor of this archdiocese.

The Virgen of Cisne
A devotion in honor of Mary
of the Ecuadorian Community

Archbishop Sean Cardinal O’Malley presiding the Mass.

El Cisne is a city in the southern region of Ecuador, in the Loja province, about 74 km (46 mi) from the city of Loja and is known for the much venerated Marian National Shrine of Our Lady of El Cisne.

The origin of this devotion dates to 1594 when drought and plague threatened the people of El Cisne with a famine. The Indians had decided to emigrate in search of a better land when an apparition of the Virgin changed their minds. A young native woman herding sheep to pasture met "with a most lovely Lady crowned with fragrant roses" who stayed with her, conversing about God while the flock grazed. "Confide in me, because I am going to help and protect you so you will never be hungry again.”

The inhabitants of El Cisne region had wanted their own Virgin Mary shrine similar to the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico City. Representatives of the City in 1594 requested sculptor Don Diego de Robles to build the Virgin de El Cisne statue which he did from the wood of a cedar tree.

This devotion is so important to the many Ecuadorians who have emigrated to other lands. ‘She (Mary) came looking for her absent children, because many of us cannot return to our countries, she finds us and protects us.’

Our Lady of Guadalupe

We traditionally associate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe with Mexico since the apparition occurred there, but Pope Pius XII declared Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, as Patroness of ALL the Americas, North and South. This declaration was affirmed by Pope John Paul II at the Synod of the Americas in his call for greater unity and collaboration among the churches of all the nations of the Americas – recognizing the uniqueness and richness of all devotions to Mary.

Our Lady of Divine Providence

The name and devotion to Our Lady of the Divine Providence originated in Italy in the thirteenth century and refers to Mary, Mother of God, in relationship with Divine Providence. This title of Mary has roots in Scripture. It is often attributed to Mary's intervention at the wedding in Cana - Christ's first public miracle that occasioned by the intercession of his mother.

Let us ask Our Lady of Providence, Mary most holy, who is the refuge of sinners, the consolation of the afflicted, and the help of Christians, to assist us in all our necessities.FB IMG 1542648575159 2

Remember, O most faithful Lady of Providence,
that you have been given to us by your Son to be our mother.

We entrust to you our labors; bless them.
We commend to you our needs; supply them.
Show for us the same concern you manifested at Cana, for we trust that whatever you ask of your Son will be done.

Pray for us on our pilgrimage that we may share
the faith and hope that marked your life.

Full of confidence in your power before God,
we place ourselves, our loved ones and all our petitions in your providential care. Amen.
